Our Beliefs

Wondering about our beliefs?

Scroll down to learn more about what it means to be reformed, our creeds, our views on grace, and more.

What does “Reformed” mean?

We are a Reformed Church.  “Reformed” means we adhere to the core principles of the Protestant Reformation:

THE WORD ALONE: We believe the Bible to be God’s Word to humankind and so it is our ultimate guide.  The main message of the Bible is God’s grace to us in Jesus Christ.

GRACE ALONE: We have nothing in ourselves of merit to offer God and are totally dependent on God’s free favor towards us in Jesus Christ.

FAITH ALONE: The only appropriate response to the WORD of God’s GRACE is grateful acceptance and trust of that Word of Grace i.e. FAITH in Jesus Christ.

Creeds

The bulk of what we believe we hold in common with the Christian church around the world and through out the ages as formulated in three universally accepted summaries of Christian teaching (called creeds) from the first centuries after Jesus’ death and resurrection:

The Apostles’ Creed, The Nicene Creed, The Athanasian Creed

To further explain these beliefs (for educating the youth, defending the faith from attack, correction of errors, etc.) longer statements of belief were written during the Protestant Reformation:

The Heidelberg Catechism, The Belgic Confession, The Canons of Dordt

In the 20th century, a short contemporary expression of our faith was formulated: Our Song of Hope

In the 21st century, a further statement of belief was adopted to respond to the evil of racism: The Confession of Belhar
